Hyundai IONIQ 5 N: When Electric Performance Gets Serious
641 horsepower, Nürburgring DNA, and a hatchback that rewrites expectations
Over the last decade, Hyundai has been on an absolute roll. It started with head-turning designs that made people do a double-take, but with the new IONIQ 5 N, they've taken things to a whole new level. This car feels like the company finally told its engineers, "Go have fun." They ran with it. It's a high-performance machine that proves Hyundai isn't just playing the game; they're changing it. The result is a thrilling, boundary-pushing machine priced at $78,199 and built at the Ulsan plant in South Korea.

Once more, Hyundai successfully built its latest high-performance machine by taking an existing model and turning up the intensity. To create the N version, the design team started with the IONIQ 5 and focused on three key elements: bold orange accents, larger wheels, and a striking rear wing. If you opt for the Cyber Grey paint, those orange stripes along the side skirts really pop, as do the exclusive N 21-inch wheels. Of course, the upgrades go far deeper than cosmetics. Compared to the standard IONIQ 5, the N sits 20 mm lower, stretches 50 mm wider, and extends 80 mm longer, giving it a much more aggressive and planted stance. The front fascia has been completely redesigned to improve cooling for those intense track sessions, while a prominent wing-type spoiler and a chunky rear diffuser handle the aerodynamics. It rides on forged 21-inch wheels wrapped in sticky Pirelli P-Zero tires, ensuring it looks the part and grips the pavement like a true sports car. And yes, Hyundai listened to the critics on this one: they've finally added a rear wiper, solving one of the few complaints about the original design. Overall, the Korean automaker tweaked just enough details to make the IONIQ 5 N stand out proudly from its siblings, signalling that this is something special.
Hop inside, and the IONIQ 5 N cabin means business. You get N aluminum pedals, a perforated leatherette steering wheel with the N button, and serious-looking N sport bucket seats up front. The dual 12.3-inch screens feature exclusive N displays for lap times and driving data. Those front bucket seats hold you tight during hard cornering, exactly what you want here. They are firm but remain comfortable enough for longer trips. The thick-rimmed steering wheel feels substantial and sporty. Thankfully, usability isn't sacrificed. You get physical buttons for climate and infotainment, plus USB-C ports, a wireless charging pad, retractable cup holders, and a sliding armrest. It's a cabin that works as hard as the car.
Measuring in at 4,715 mm (185 ⅝ inches) long, the IONIQ 5 N fits neatly into the compact hot hatchback segment, but it doesn't skimp on passenger space. Thanks to the clever packaging, it can still seat five adults, even with those bolstered front seats. For families, the ISOFIX child seat anchors are present, though a little tucked away in the seat cushions; the tethers are easier to locate. As for cargo, it's a practical compromise. While there's no frunk (front trunk) as you might find in other EVs, the rear cargo area offers a solid 740 litres with the seats up. Fold those rear seats down, and that space expands to a cavernous 1,680 litres, giving you plenty of room for a set of track wheels or a weekend's worth of gear.

Turn on the IONIQ 5 N, and the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster looks fairly subtle at first glance. It presents information in a familiar Hyundai layout, with only the central section available for personalization. But the moment you press one of the N mode buttons on the steering wheel, the screens come alive. The cluster transforms into a performance-oriented display, showing you electric motor temperatures, battery temperature, a G meter, and even a virtual tachometer that tells you when to "shift". It looks seriously cool and immediately puts you in a track-day mindset.

The 12.3-inch central infotainment screen follows the same dual-personality approach. Under normal driving, it functions like the standard IONIQ 5 system, which is intuitive and easy to use. But dive into the N displays, and a whole new world opens up. Here, you can fine-tune the ESC (electronic stability control), adjust the steering feel, suspension stiffness, and motor response, or pull up a live G-force readout. You can even activate the launch control system or fire up a lap timer for when you hit the circuit. Of course, if you aren't busy chasing lap records (though we suspect it will be tempting), all the everyday essentials are still here. You get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a dedicated EV information page to monitor charging and energy usage, and a premium Bose sound system to enjoy the soundtrack on the way home.

The IONIQ 5 N is a staggering piece of engineering, but first, let's look at the numbers. With N Grin Boost engaged, you get 641 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque, which means 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 260 km/h (161 mph). Absolutely bonkers. Unlike some EVs that only excel in straight lines, this one proved itself at the Nürburgring. That testing led to serious hardware upgrades: N-specific disc brakes with regen, an Electronic Limited Slip Differential, and a sophisticated battery thermal management system. The structure is reinforced with 42 extra welding points and 2.1 meters of additional adhesives. Motor and battery mounts are beefed up, while the subframes are enhanced for lateral rigidity. The steering is stiffer, and the pedal feel has been reworked. Yes, there is the N Active Sound+ system that simulates an exhaust note because sometimes you want to hear the performance.

Driving the IONIQ 5 N is genuinely incredible. While many EVs prioritize straight-line speed, this one feels engineered for corner carving. It is fast, but its true mission is to be a track-capable machine, and that Nürburgring development shines through. The car feels extremely stable and stiff; tossing it into high-speed corners feels almost effortless. The reinforced chassis and steering column provide plenty of feedback, keeping you connected to the road. The suspension is firm; you will feel potholes, but remember, this is a proper sports car at heart. Let's talk about that N Active Sound+ feature. It might sound gimmicky on paper, but picture this: you are wearing gloves and a helmet, pushing hard on a straight line, then downshifting to carry maximum speed through a tight corner. As you approach the rev limit, you hear the simulated engine screaming, and the system cleverly encourages you to shift before you lose momentum. It is brilliantly engineered to make the experience more engaging.
Braking is another standout. There is virtually no fade, no matter how hard you push. The system remains predictable and reliable lap after lap, allowing you to brake deep into corners and get back on the power with confidence. You get two customizable N buttons on the steering wheel to switch between different performance personalities depending on your mood, and launch control is easily accessible through the infotainment screen when you're in N mode. Simply put, we had an absolute blast driving this car. Everyone who rode along was shocked that this quirky, compact hatchback could deliver so much excitement. It is refreshing to see that an EV can be this fun.

Officially, Hyundai quotes about 356 km (222 mi) of range on a full charge. On a Level 2 home charger, expect around 15 hours from empty to full. The fast-charging story is more impressive. Hyundai claims a 10 to 80 percent charge in just 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger. During our testing on a 100 kW unit, we went from 37 to 80 percent in 29 minutes at a peak of 88.7 kW, showing real numbers that align with expectations. Efficiency proved reasonable, too. We averaged 21 kWh/100 km over a week, translating to roughly 381 kilometres (238 miles) of real-world range. Our takeaway? If you have access to a charger at home or work, daily driving is completely stress-free. The IONIQ 5 N delivers weekend track performance without compromising weekday practicality.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N delivers both an exciting driving experience and the practicality of a hatchback. It looks cool and has personality. More importantly, it makes the driver feel special, turning a typical grocery run into something memorable. Cars that balance daily usability with track-ready performance are rare. It feels like a breath of fresh air.
