2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Revealed: Better, But Was It Necessary?

Volkswagen has revealed the all-new 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, bringing more power, a redesigned interior, updated technology and completely new bodywork to its two-row midsize SUV. The second-generation Cross Sport retains the same basic formula: five seats, generous cargo space and a sportier profile than the three-row Atlas. The exterior gets double-stacked LED headlights, available illuminated VW logos, new full-width lighting elements and cleaner body surfacing.

Inside, the changes are more significant. Volkswagen has added more soft-touch materials, new colour combinations and available Nappa leather, while screen sizes grow to 12.9 inches on the entry model and 15 inches on upper trims. There is also Qi2 wireless charging for two phones, five USB-C ports and available massaging front seats. The biggest mechanical change is under the hood. Volkswagen's latest 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder now produces 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, making this the most powerful Atlas Cross Sport yet. An eight-speed automatic remains, while Canadian models get standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Towing capacity remains 5,000 pounds.

Volkswagen also says fuel economy should improve despite the extra power, although official numbers have not been announced. A hybrid is planned, but only for the mid-cycle refresh. Driver assistance technology has also been upgraded, including lane-change assistance through Travel Assist, Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control on higher trims and an Emergency Assist system capable of guiding the vehicle toward the side of the road if the driver becomes incapacitated.

Did Volkswagen Really Need a New Atlas Cross Sport?

On its own, the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport appears to be a meaningful improvement. It looks more premium, offers better technology and gets a welcome increase in power. The bigger question is whether Volkswagen really needed to dedicate another generation to a vehicle that already sits closely beside the Atlas and Tiguan. Volkswagen's Canadian lineup remains relatively small, and another distinct model could arguably have added more variety than another interpretation of the Atlas formula. A smaller affordable EV, wagon or another enthusiast-oriented model would certainly give buyers something they cannot already find elsewhere in a Volkswagen showroom. Still, for families wanting Atlas levels of space without a third row, the Cross Sport continues to make sense.

Pricing and complete Canadian specifications will be announced before the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport arrives in early 2027.
