Going Home: Taking the Defender OCTA Off-Road at Eastnor

There are places where you can drive a Land Rover off-road, and then there is Eastnor. Hidden among thousands of acres surrounding Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, England, the estate has been intertwined with Land Rover's history for more than six decades. Technologies we now take almost for granted, including Hill Descent Control, electronic traction control, adjustable air suspension and Terrain Response, have all been developed or tested using Eastnor's mixture of mud, steep climbs, rocks, water and heavily wooded trails. And things were about to get muddy.

A Few Days Inside the World of JLR

The trip wasn't exclusively about Defender. Our visit took us further into JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) than we normally get to go, including time at the company's headquarters in Gaydon and at its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton. There, surrounded by some of the engineering behind JLR's next generation of vehicles, we were given an early look at something particularly interesting: a camouflaged prototype of the upcoming Range Rover GT. We couldn't see everything, of course. But we were able to get close to the vehicle, climb inside and discover some of the technology and thinking behind what will become another member of the Range Rover family. Seeing a vehicle that represents JLR's future while standing inside the facilities helping bring it to life gave us a much better perspective on where the company is heading and how it plans to get there.



A Little Bit of England Along the Way

There was also time during the trip to experience a little more of England outside the automotive world. We made our way to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, where one item on the list was almost mandatory: proper British fish and chips. It was the simpler side of the trip, exploring one of England's most historic towns with arguably its most famous comfort food. On another evening, things went considerably more upscale at Dormy House, where dinner traded fish and chips for high-end cuisine in the English countryside. It was a very different experience, but one that fit perfectly into a trip that constantly moved between British tradition, modern luxury and serious automotive engineering. Eastnor added another layer to that picture by taking us from the development facilities and straight into the terrain where Defender's engineering is meant to prove itself.

That was where the civilized part of the trip ended, and the mud began. After spending the morning tackling steep climbs, tight trails, rocks and mud, we traded the Defenders for a much more relaxed afternoon BBQ on the estate. The setup felt almost like luxury glamping, with a huge tent, good food and a surprisingly refined atmosphere after a morning spent getting properly dirty.



Back to Where Land Rovers Learned to Get Dirty

This wasn't our first time driving the Defender OCTA. It was our third.

Previous drives had already demonstrated what happens when you combine a Defender with a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged mild-hybrid V8 producing 626 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The OCTA can reach 100 km/h in around four seconds, yet JLR hasn't simply dropped a huge engine into a Defender and called it a day. The suspension, chassis, track width, ride height, wheel arches and numerous other components have been altered to create something considerably more serious.

However, before Eastnor, our off-road experience with the OCTA hadn't been particularly challenging. Driving along an off-road trail is one thing. Here, the terrain was going to demand considerably more from the vehicle, and from me behind the wheel. There was also one small complication. The steering wheel was on the wrong side. At least, that is how it felt to me. As our off-road instructor was quick to point out, we were in England, so technically it was on the right side. He even joked that the Romans had apparently been doing things that way with their chariots long before us.

Right-Hand Drive Changes Everything

Driving a right-hand-drive vehicle on pavement takes some adjustment. Doing it while positioning a massive Defender between trees, rocks and deep ruts is something else entirely. Years of driving from the left side had calibrated my sense of where a vehicle sits on the road. Suddenly, I was on the right, looking across a huge hood and trying to judge exactly where the opposite front wheel was while an instructor calmly pointed me toward something that barely resembled a road. Eastnor did not give me much time to recalibrate. One moment we were crawling through the forest, and the next I was looking over the hood at a descent steep enough for the ground to disappear from view. We encountered steep climbs and descents, deep ruts, extremely tight corners, rock crawling and plenty of mud. There were moments when the Defender leaned far enough to make me question whether continuing was really a good idea. Then the instructor would point us forward, and the OCTA kept moving, turning obstacles that looked genuinely challenging into something that felt almost effortless from the driver's seat.

Like Taking an Elephant Through a Hallway

The OCTA's capability was becoming obvious. Its size was another matter. Eastnor's forest trails can become incredibly narrow, with trees closing in on both sides and very little room for error. Guiding something as wide as the OCTA through those sections felt a little like trying to squeeze an elephant through a hallway. Yet the longer I drove it, the smaller it seemed to become around me. I started learning where the wheels were, where the corners of the vehicle sat and how much room I actually had. The visibility helps, as do the surround-view cameras, but most of the confidence comes from how predictable the OCTA feels.

That became especially clear over the more heavily articulated sections. Rather than wrestling with the Defender, I placed it where the instructor told me, fed in the throttle and let the chassis work underneath me. Wheels disappeared into holes while others climbed onto rocks, the body leaned at angles that initially looked questionable, and the OCTA kept moving. At this pace, its enormous power output almost becomes irrelevant. Traction, articulation, clearance and control are what matter. Then we reached the high-speed course. Suddenly, all that power became very relevant.



From Rock Crawling to Something Resembling a Rally Stage

If the technical course demonstrated one side of the OCTA, the high-speed off-road section exposed a completely different personality. Rather than asking the Defender to crawl carefully over obstacles, we were now carrying high speed across loose gravel and uneven surfaces. And that's when things became slightly ridiculous. Accelerate hard and that V8 transforms the Defender. Gravel begins flying from underneath the tires as the rear starts moving around. You can feel the suspension working furiously beneath you, allowing individual wheels to travel through their range while the body remains remarkably controlled. We started sliding it. Not accidentally. Properly sideways. On gravel. In a Defender.

The course included fast sections, uneven terrain and a slalom that seemed designed for something considerably smaller and lighter. You could place the OCTA into a slide, feel the vehicle rotate and then use the throttle to help straighten it for the next corner. This shouldn't feel natural in something this tall, wide and heavy. But somehow, it does. The 6D Dynamics suspension is a major reason why. Its hydraulically interlinked dampers are designed to provide significant wheel articulation off-road while controlling pitch and roll without relying on conventional anti-roll bars. On the technical course, that translates into articulation and traction.

At speed, it becomes body control. Watching the wheels move across the uneven gravel gives you a visual demonstration of just how much work is happening underneath the vehicle. The body is being thrown across terrain that would be completely unreasonable for a conventional performance vehicle, while the suspension fights to keep the tires connected to the ground. And then you put your foot down again. The V8 answers immediately.

The OCTA Makes More Sense at Eastnor

Eastnor doesn't necessarily make the Defender OCTA less ridiculous. It simply makes the idea behind it easier to understand. Here, its two personalities finally make sense together. It can be slow, deliberate and remarkably controlled when the terrain demands precision, then completely change character when the trail opens up. The power gives the OCTA its drama. The engineering underneath is what allows that performance to coexist with everything still expected from a Defender. At Eastnor, those two sides stop feeling contradictory. They become the entire point.
