First look: Range Rover GT brings grand touring luxury to the electric era

Ahead of its global debut, we had the opportunity to see the camouflaged prototype of the all-new Range Rover GT at JLR’s Propulsion Centre, where the company showcased the engineering and design philosophy behind what will become the fifth member of the Range Rover family.

Although the exterior remained hidden beneath camouflage, we were invited inside the vehicle, and it quickly became clear that the GT is aiming to redefine luxury grand touring.

The biggest takeaway was the seating. Range Rover has invested significant effort into developing seats that are as visually elegant as they are exceptionally comfortable. The result is a seating experience that feels almost custom-tailored, providing outstanding support while maintaining the soft, effortless comfort expected of a flagship Range Rover. It’s a level of luxury and long-distance comfort that raises the bar even further for the brand.

The cabin itself embraces a clean, minimalist approach, centred around a new single OLED display. Premium wool-based textiles and carefully selected materials reinforce the calm, contemporary atmosphere.

One surprising detail was the sheer number of wireless charging pads. We have never seen so many in a production vehicle, with up to four charging locations two in the front and two for rear passengers highlighting the GT’s focus on convenience for everyone on board.

Built on JLR’s new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), the Range Rover GT will become the first all-electric Range Rover based on the new platform. While it launches initially as a battery-electric vehicle, the architecture has been engineered to support future hybrid applications.

Rather than following the SUV formula of the Velar, the GT adopts distinct grand touring proportions. Standing approximately 1.56 metres tall with a lower centre of gravity, it delivers a more car-like driving position while preserving the elevated visibility that has long defined the Range Rover experience.

Engineers also focused heavily on refinement. More than 800 hours of wind tunnel testing contributed to improved aerodynamics, while a highly rigid body structure helps deliver what Range Rover says will be its quietest vehicle ever. Combined with a new electric drive unit and carefully tuned chassis, the GT has been designed to blend engaging driving dynamics with effortless long-distance comfort.

Practical touches include a 97-litre front trunk, new GT-exclusive design elements, and a cabin engineered to remain comfortable in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +50°C even while charging.

From our early preview at JLR’s Propulsion Centre, it is clear that the Range Rover GT isn’t simply another entrant into the growing electric SUV market. It preserves everything buyers expect from a Range Rover: luxury, capability, commanding visibility and effortless comfort while pushing into entirely new territory. The GT aims to define a segment of its own, marrying grand touring dynamics with genuine Range Rover DNA. If the production vehicle lives up to what we experienced, it has the potential to become one of the most compelling luxury EVs to arrive in recent years.
